What All-Wheel Drive Is and Why You Might Want It
When you’re shopping for a used vehicle, you may see AWD listed as one of the drivetrain options. But what is all-wheel drive, and why do so many drivers look for it? That’s what we’re here to discuss today. Keep reading with The Auto Group of Mt Pleasant, MI, to discover what all-wheel drive is and why you might want it.
What Is All-Wheel Drive? The Short Answer
All-wheel drive, or AWD, is a drivetrain system that can send power to all four wheels. Unlike a two-wheel-drive vehicle, which sends engine power to either the front or rear wheels, an AWD vehicle can distribute power between the front and rear axles as needed. This can help your vehicle maintain traction when road conditions are less than ideal. That can be especially useful when driving on wet roads, gravel, or snowy and icy roads around Michigan.
How Does All-Wheel Drive Work?
An AWD system uses sensors and drivetrain components to help determine how much power should go to each axle. Depending on the vehicle, AWD may continuously send power to all four wheels or automatically adjust power distribution when additional traction is needed.
For example, if one set of wheels begins to lose traction, the system can help direct power toward wheels with better grip. This can help the vehicle remain more stable and confident on slippery surfaces. AWD isn’t a replacement for good tires or careful driving, but it can be a helpful feature when dealing with changing road conditions.
The Benefits of AWD
There are several reasons drivers look for all-wheel-drive cars and SUVs when shopping for a used vehicle. One of the biggest benefits is added traction. AWD can help provide additional grip when roads are wet, snowy, or slippery. AWD can also be useful for drivers who regularly travel on unpaved roads or other surfaces where traction can change quickly. Many AWD vehicles also offer a balance of everyday drivability and added capability.
Keep in mind that AWD systems vary between vehicles. Some are designed primarily to improve traction on paved roads, while others are built with additional capabilities for rougher conditions.
